Abstract
After the Second World War, a new genre of object ceramics was created by the group called sodeisha in Japan. Object ceramics led modern ceramics in Japan and spread around the world over the half century from the foundation of sodeisha in 1948 to its dissolution in 1997. The purpose of this study was to know the fact that object ceramics, which was in fashion during that period, is similar to the modern abstract sculptures in formative elements and find that it is closely associated with modern Western abstract art through the works of sodeisha. In particular, various modes of object ceramics found in the works of Yagi Kazuo, who represents sodeisha, reveal the characteristics and stream of modern Western abstract art well; the patterns decorating the early works of object ceramics were applications of various techniques in abstract painting of Paul Klee and Joan Miro and the later works were imitations based on the modes of modern Western abstract sculptures of Isamu Noguchi, Constantin Brancusi, and Henry Moore. Object ceramics is characterized by the pursuit of a new form of modernism by removing usefulness, which characterizes the conventional ceramics along with aesthetics. Such a new challenge was enabled by the free ideology of sodeisha that negated the foundation of ceramic tradition and led to the development in the opposite direction of abstraction to the Japanese sculptures focusing on Rodin’s realism due to the influences of Isamu Noguchi’s ceramic sculptures, which were introduced to Japan in the early 1950s. In addition, this study made a comparative description of Yagi Kazuo’s object works clearly revealing the influences of modern abstract art.
