Abstract

This study analyzed the decision making priority for the product innovation using analytical hierarchy process (AHP) in terms of organizational aspects, particularly for the automobile parts industry in Daegu. The questionnaire consists of 3 criteria at first hierarchy and 9 items at second hierarchy. Especially, 3 criteria are as follows: internal organizational structures, external cooperation and internal & external information transfer. Respondents are 10 company directors or assistant directors who work in the departments such as strategic planning, marketing, production and R&D. As a result, this study found out as follows. 3 criteria at first hierarchy in order of priority are internal & external information transfer, internal organizational structures and external cooperation, while important items at second hierarchy in order of priority are efficient information management relating to new product development, company-wide excellent organizational flexibility toward changes and innovations, smooth internal information transfer relating to new product development and smooth external information transfer relating to new product development. To make sure the empirical results using AHP, Kruskal-Wallis test tested for 3 criteria at first hierarchy level. According to the results of Kruskal-Wallis test, there exist no significant differences between 3 criteria at first hierarchy level. It showed that they don’t have any kinds of ranking reversal in terms of first hierarchy level. First of all, decision maker should consider the first ranked item at second hierarchy level. Therefore, decision maker should take the following items into consideration: efficient information management relating to new product development, company-wide excellent organizational flexibility toward changes and innovations, and quality improvement by suppliers to deliver parts for new products. The results of the research can provide managerial implications for decision making in terms of product innovation for the automobile parts industry in Daegu because the object of the empirical research is professionals for administrative work who served as directors or assistant directors in the strategic planning, marketing, production and R&D departments. However, further national wide studies are needed to generalize the empirical results.
