Abstract
This study explores creative movement classes for children who have been identified as talented and gifted in dancing using the Motif theory. The Motif theory is a system of notations that illustrates dance thinking. It is a form of mind-mappings that is used to give a phrase of a movement’s intention without describing the details of how the action is being performed. In this paper, the researcher developed a creative movement program that consists of six sessions using the Motif symbols and applied it in a class at the institute in Chungcheong province in Korea. The ten elementary female participants were taught a number of the movement concepts and choreographic frameworks. By analyzing students’ journals and employing open-ended questionnaires, the researcher obtained the following results: First, the movement class using the Motif theory was helpful to the participants in developing their ideas about dance creation, and in enhancing their personal sensibilities and their ability to self-assess. Second, the program helped the participants to understand the process of dance creation and to stimulate their interest and enjoyment of this process. Third, the program provided the teacher with opportunities to evaluate the participants’ attitude and commitment to dancing. The researcher concluded that the Motif theory can be an effective method of teaching talented and gifted children to develop their dancing skills and that it can be used in a public school setting.
