Abstract

Asian lacquer has been used as a paint and adhesive since ancient times in Korea. Bone powder was often added to lacquer, and the lacquer layer containing bone powder is usually thicker than the pure lacquer layer. The reason for using bone powder in a thick lacquer layer has not been studied through experiments until now. In this study, the effect of bone powder on the drying of lacquer was investigated by comparing the curing behavior of lacquer and bone powder-containing lacquer by naturally curing lacquer between glass plates. The sample with lacquer only was difficult to dry over a certain thickness, and the inside of the sample did not dry even after a long time. On the other hand, the lacquer samples containing bone powder cured faster than pure lacquer, and the drying progressed even to the inside of the sample. It was found that calcination, size and amount of bone powder also had an effect on drying of lacquer. In microscopic observation, it could be seen that, unlike lacquer, voids existed here and there in the lacquer containing bone powder and there were crevices on the outer layer. From this, it is presumed that bone powder contained in lacquer helps to form an air passage connecting the inside and outside of the lacquer layer and promotes the drying of lacquer.
