Abstract

This study explores the mechanism of la différant thoughts underlying the extent of reaching destruction and the process of destruction among pre-service elementary teachers in an inquiry activity based on Jacques Derrida’s theory of destruction. The study recruited 12 groups of preservice elementary school teachers (n=36) who underwent the course “Life Science Textbook and Teaching Material Research & Teaching Methods.” The results indicate that three of the groups failed to produce different concepts using their ideas combined with destruction. This finding indicates that their viewpoint aligns with structuralism; specifically, they could accomplish learning goals in line with the curriculum given that they adhered strictly to textbook activities as they were only. The remaining nine other groups exhibited a poststructuralism prespective; they intended to continue seeking new concepts through la différant thinking, which is fundamentally linked to destruction. There are six types of la différant thoughts, and the results indicated that they evenly worked on the destruction of textbook inquiry activities for the nine groups. In particular, one of the six types, supplement and replacement, was the most effective. In summary, when inquiry-based activities are newly designed, experience in supplement and replacement may provide teachers with opportunities to develop strategies beyond existing framework, ultimately fostering the creation of innovative instructional classes.
