본 연구는 75년의 역사를 지닌 장수기업 남화토건의 성장과정을 살펴보고, 기업가정신의 연속성이 장수기업에 지닌 함의를 고찰하였다. 먼저 남화토건의 성장과정을 크게 창업기-성장기-성숙기라는 생애주기 관점으로 구분하여 살펴보고 각 시기를 이끈 기업가정신을 조명하였다. 이를 통해 본 연구는 남화토건의 성장 과정별로 구체적 기업가정신을 고찰하고 그 역할과 의의를 논하였다. 둘째, 남화토건의 생애주기에 따른 기업가정신의 흐름에 주목함으로써 장수기업으로 가는 성공경로에 대한 시사점을 제시하였다. 남화토건의기업사는 1946년 기업을 창업하고 성장시켰던 최상옥 회장의 시기와 1993년 최상준 대표이사가 경영권을 승계한 이후로 나눌 수 있다. 최상옥 회장은 남화토건의 창업기와 성장기를 이끌었다. 창업기는 ‘제대로 된 공사’라는 업에 대한 분명한 목적의식과 ‘신뢰’의원칙을 고수하는 기업가정신을 확인할 수 있었다. 생존기를 무사히 넘긴 성장기는 ‘공사책임 원칙’, ‘3무 경영원칙’과 같은 사업의 운영방향과 체계를 전문화하기 위한 도전과 의지로 점철된다. 세대교체 이후 최상준 대표이사는 남화토건을 안정적인 성장기로 이끌면서 성숙기 진입의 발판을 마련하였다. 최상준 대표이사는 ‘정도경영 및 공존의 문화 구축’ 과 ‘내부역량 강화’를 통해 조직의 구성원들을 하나로 결속하고 IMF 위기를 돌파하면서남화토건이 성장기에서 성숙기로 넘어갈 수 있는 발판을 마련하였다. 아울러, 산학협력을통한 신기술 개발과 품질인증 등 조직혁신에 주력하고 코스닥 상장을 통해 성숙기의 동력을 마련하였다. 남화토건의 장수는 대를 이어 창업 이념을 지키고 혁신을 이어간 기업가정신의 계승과 발전이라는 성공적 세대교체에서 찾을 수 있었다
Abstract
This study investigates the growth stages of Namhwa Construction Co. Ltd, a company with a 75-year history, and examines the process of entrepreneurship for long-lived companies. First, to understand the factors that can lead a company to longevity, this study adopts the company life-cycle approach, which divides the growth of the corporation into the three stages of start-up, growth, and maturity, and analyzes the role of entrepreneurship in each stage. Second, the process of change in entrepreneurship is examined according to the growth stages of the company, and the success path to a long-lived company is identified. Namhwa Construction was founded in 1946 by Choi Sang-ok. His younger brother, Choi Sang-jun, has been the chief executive officer(CEO) of the company since 1993. In the start-up stage, the founder set a clear goal of “good construction” and adhered to the principle of “trust.” In the growth stage, the founder built a systematic management system reflecting the “Construction Responsibility Principle” and “3 No Management.” After becoming CEO, Choi Sang-Jun made a leap forward that led to a stable growth phase. In the growth stage, the CEO built a culture of ethical management and corporate social responsibility and reinforced training and education of employees. In the maturity stage, the CEO focused on organizational innovation through initial public offering success and research and development intensity to continue stable growth and created a foothold for a new leap forward.
