Abstract
Heungcheon Temple was built as a Royal-tomb temples built of queen Shindeok, but most of the buildings was destroyed by fire in 1504. In 1794, when it was moved to its current location with the Bosi(Dana) of Kim Jo-soon, it was called ‘Shinheungsa’. In 1865, after King Gojong ascended the throne, Heungseon Daewongun renamed ‘Shinheungsa’ to ‘Heungcheonsa’. Daebang and yosachae were renovated with the Bosi(Dana) of Heungseon Daewongun, and a number of discords were created with the Bosi(Dana) of the royal family, court ladies, and ordinary people. In this article, I would like to examine the characteristics of the iconography of Heungcheonsa Geuknakbojeon Amitabha buddhist painting, Hyeonwangdo, Doryangsindo, painting of Indra, and Cheonryongdo, which were created at the end of the 19th century. In the Amitabha Buddha Painting of the geukrabo-jeon (1867), the radiation pattern on the Buddha's clothes, the colorful patterns on the white background of the collar, the primary color blue on the hem and ribbon, and the rising lotus pedestal are expressions preferred by Uiun Jau. The collar of the dae and part of the blue point of the clothes are also used in the Hyeonwangdo as well. Uiun Zau is a Zen monk who played an active part in Sabul Mountain, and he painted Amitabha Buddha painting, Ksitigarbha and Ten Underworld Kings Painting, Hyunwangdo in Hwangcheon Temple. The Doryangsindo (estimated in 1885) is the god who supervised the Doryang, and the strong shading of the face shows the majesty of the Doryangsin. The soft wrinkles of the official uniform and the Western-style shade expression of the texture can be seen in Daeheo Chehun's Buddhaist Painting of nine Grades of rebirth in the Western Paradise and Sinjeongdo. The shade of the face of Chehun is also used in major honorifics such as Skanda-Karttikeya, sakra devanam indra, and Brahma-Deva in the Bongrimsa Shinjungdo (1883), and the apricot color used as a background in theDoryangsindo is also used in the Bongrimsa Shinjungdo. Daebang (Manseru) Amitabha Buddhist Painting and Painting of Indra are Buddhist paintings that were painted in 1890 under the leadership of Buddhist monk Geungjo. Geungjo was a monk painter who worked mainly in Seoul and Gyeonggi. The feature of Daebang Amitabha Buddhist painting is that it expresses the radiation pattern of gold leaf in the light. In 1898, the records of the Cheonryongdo were damaged, so the master painter is unknown. The screen is a new format by simplifying the existing Heungcheonsa Sinjungdo, and it is characterized by a zom expressing the whole body of the mountain god and Jowangsin in the center in front of Witaecheon. The Buddhist paintings of Heungcheonsa Temple at the end of the 19th century, examined so far, consist of paintings in which only the royal family, court ladies, courtiers and ordinary people participated, and were led by monk painters who were active mainly in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province.
