Abstract

The moldeling Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue enshrined in the Geumdang Hall of Naksansa-temple is confirmed to be a bodhisattva statue originally made of molded clay. This Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue is the famous Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue that was created and enshrined in the Geumdang Hall of Naksansa-temple by Master Uisang to commemorate his personal encounter (親見) with Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva at the Avalokitesvara-cave of Naksansa-temple. So far, we have looked at the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue at the Geumdang Hall of Naksansa-temple from various angles. First is the composition background. the moldeling Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue at the Geumdang Hall of Naksansa-temple was created after Master Uisang saw Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva in person, under the guidance of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, the Geumdang Hall was built in the sacred place above the Avalokitesvara-cave, and the main Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue was created and enshrined. The two Boju received from Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva and the Dragon King of the sea were also stored here. Second, this Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue and the two Boju have been well preserved and believed to have been preserved until the Mongol invasion. Due to the Mongol invasion, the Avalokitevara statue was damaged, and the two Boju were moved around Yangju fortress and Myeongju fortress during the war and were stored in the royal palace. The Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue was almost damaged by a wildfire (野火) during the Mongol invasion around 1260-70, so it was rebuilt as if it were a new one. It is known that this statue went through several renovations and disappeared during the 6/25 Korean War. Third, the dry-painted Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue currently enshrined in the Wontongbojeon is a late Goryeo Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue created in the late Goryeo and early Joseon dynasties. It is highly likely that it was modeled after the newly created Naksan Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue in the late 13th century, and so it can be seen that it is closely related to the original Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue. Fourth, the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue from the Joseon Dynasty is believed to be the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva of the early Joseon dynasty, which underwent extensive repairs during the fire in the Avalokitevara Hall in the 20th year of King Seongjong's reign (February 24, 1489). Fifth, it is possible that the new costume added to the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue around 1230 during the Goryeo dynasty was also added to the newly rebuilt Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue around 1260-70 and the rebuilt Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue in the 20th year of King Seongjong's reign (1489) in the Joseon dynasty. Master Uisang's two Boju were inherited during the Mongol invasion and were stored in the royal palace, and they were found to be buried in a stone pagoda during the reign of King Sejo in the early Joseon dynasty. Sixth, it can be seen that this Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue at Naksansa-temple is the greatest masterpiece of the late Goryeo or early Joseon dynasties (1489), a successor to the oldest and most famous Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue along with the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue, which had the greatest spiritual power, including the history of rebirth during the unification of Shilla.
