초록

가계생산모형에 따르면 기혼여성의 노동공급은 출산과 동시에 결정되기 때문에 출산의 내생성으로 인하여 연립편의가 발생한다. 그러나 연립편의를 해결할 수 있는 적절한 도구변수를 찾기 어렵기 때문에 이에 대한 믿을만한 추정결과를 얻을 수 없다. 또한 기혼여성 노동공급 시간의 분포는 특징적으로 검열되고(censored), 비대칭적이며, 첨예성을 갖는다. 본 연구에서는 연립편의에 대하여 강건하고 분포의 특성에 적합한 효율적 추정방법인 검열순위회귀(Censored Quantile Regression) 방법을 이용하여 기혼여성의 노동공급과 경제활동에 대하여 실증적으로 분석하였다. 2000년 한국노동패널에서 얻은 기혼여성 3,973명을 표본으로 분석한 결과를 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 취학이전 자녀수의 추정계수는 각각의 순위에 대하여 -0.005～-0.355이며 통계적으로 유의하였지만 검열순위회귀분석 추정계수는 토빗추정이나 기존의 연구결과와 비교하여 훨씬 작았다. 이는 기혼여성의 노동공급에서 출산효과가 내생성으로 인하여 과대 측정될 수 있다는 Browning(1992)의 주장을 뒷받침하는 것으로 볼 수 있다. 둘째, 노동공급의 임금탄력성은 각각의 순위에 대하여 0.409～0.523으로 통계적으로 유의하게 추정되었고 이는 음의 탄력성을 보인 기존의 연구결과와 달랐다. 셋째, 배우자의 근로소득 및 기타 총가구소득에 대한 추정계수는 통계적으로 유의하고 기혼여성의 노동공급과 반비례관계를 갖는 것으로 추정되었다.

Abstract

The home production model implies that the labor supply of a married female is determined simultaneously with the fertility of a household. Thus, the estimates of the labor supply function are prone to simultaneity bias. However, it is difficult to find good instrumental variables. Furthermore, the labor supply of the married female also shows stylized distributional characteristics: censoredness and asymmetry. This paper provides a statistical assessment of the labor supply using the censored quantile regression to cope with endogeneity and non-normal distribution. First, the fertility effect is estimated significantly in the range -0.005～-0.355 by censored quantile regression, Which is weaker than the Tobit estimate. This finding supports Browning (1992) in the sense that the fertility effect can be affected and presumably exaggerated by endogeneity. Second, the labor supply elasticity to the hourly wage is estimated significantly in the range 0.409～0.523, which is different from the previous results with negative elasticities. Finally, the labor supply increases in age among the age group of over 40's compared to the age group of under 40's. This finding reveals that home production restricts the labor supply of the age group of under 40's.
