Abstract
This study used monthly data on the economically active population of Korea to examine which factors determine the entry of the self-employed into the labor market. In particular, the study focuses on clarifying whether the entry into self-employment was an inevitable move due to economic recession (push hypothesis) or a voluntary move due to entrepreneurship (pull hypothesis). To this end, monthly short-term panels were configured for the statistics of the monthly Economically Active Population Survey of Korea to observe the dynamics of entry into self-employment. Empirical analysis was conducted to determine whether people were voluntarily pulled or involuntarily pushed into self-employment, the results of which showed that the push aspect of self-employment was strong in Korea when the economy deteriorated and when the unemployment of wage workers increased. Meanwhile, it was clearly found that the effect the economic situation had on the entry into self-employment differed according to the individual's level of education. The push hypothesis was verified amongst those with a lower education, whereas the pull hypothesis was confirmed amongst those with higher education. Amongst different occupations, it was found that the push hypothesis held true for those in the service sector as well as agriculture and fishing.
