Abstract

This paper evaluates the effects of export promotion on Korean manufacturing SMEs’ performance. While most studies assess only the various export margins, we additionally examine the effect of export promotion on the overall performance of firms, such as sales and employment and the share of export firms. Exploiting assumptions from the treatment effects literature, we identify a casual export-boosting effect. We find that export promotion program has a relatively positive effect on the overall export growth rate of the entire enterprise. This positive effect becomes more significant if the firm size is less than 100 employees, export volume is smaller than $1 million, and firm age is shorter than five years. However, we find that the bigger the size of the firm, the greater the export volume and the longer the firm’s age, the greater the share of export firms among the treated firms.
