한국과 미국의 노인부양에 영향을 미치는 요인의 비교

초록

본 연구는 한국과 미국의 노인부양 결정에 영향을 미치는 요인을 인식론적 관점에서 접근하여 그 원인을 규명하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 65세 이상의 노인을 대상으로 한 노인모형과, 18-64세의 자녀를 대상으로 한 자녀모형의 2가지로 나누어 다항로짓모형을 이용하여 분석하였다. 분석결과 한국의 생활전반에 커다란 영향을 끼친 유교와 미국의 생활양식의 기초가 되는 실용주의가 부모와 자녀의 동거에 영향을 주고 있다. 한국의 경우, 많은 부분에서 서구화가 진행되어 있기는 하지만 개인과 실용적 가치관을 중시하는 미국에 비해 여전히 유교적 측면에서 강조되는 효의 가치를 중시하고 있다.

Abstract

In recent years, family structures are changing dramatically where various types of family other than traditional family structure are common. However, family structures show considerable difference among societies. In this study, we analyze the determinants identifying co-residence of parents and children in Korea and the US. We establish two models: elderly model focusing on parents of 65 years and over and children model focusing on children of 18-64 years. We interpret the results in terms of theoretical inquiry about the differing epistemological backgrounds of Confucianism and Pragmatism of the two countries. In general societal perception rules human behavior, the tradition of Confucianism and Pragmatism which still influences the two societies identifies human behavior such as co-residence among generations. We argue that in this rapid change era toward aging society, research to establish systems for taking care of the old should be conducted continuously.
