Abstract
This study focuses on understanding the spatial foundation and its operational patterns of the Hwang Sin (1562~1617, penname Chupo) family of the Changwon Hwang clan through the framework of Neo-Confucian symbolism, and aims to derive its broader significance. When spatiality is divided into natural and human spaces, the latter is meticulously designed and managed according to human needs. Joseon was a Neo-Confucian state. Accordingly, the basic concept of space that the Confucian literati of Joseon sought to design and manage was grounded in Neo-Confucian ideals and orientations. The Hwang Sin family’s spatial practices exemplify this model. Based on their residence in Seoul, they established land-based foundations in Buyeo and Ganghwa, managing diverse sites there while continuously seeking Neo-Confucian symbolic representation. In various spaces adjacent to Gongju and Buyeo—such as Changgang Seowon 滄江書院, and the Uiyeol Shrine in Bundaeri 粉垈里—they infused core Neo-Confucian values such as dohak 道學 (moral learning), loyalty and filial piety 忠孝, and righteousness 義理. Meanwhile, the Chupo Yeongdang 秋浦影堂 in Ganghwa was characterized by its pursuit of a broader social expansion of filial practices. Thus, this case study of the Hwang Sin family provides a valuable perspective on the practical application of spatial management principles among the Joseon literati and serves as an exploratory attempt to connect social history with intellectual history.
