Abstract

This paper compares prices on online and offline stores using Lotte Super’s scanner data. The results are as follows. First, 93% of products have identical online and offline prices. Second, when online and offline prices are different, online prices are cheaper than offline prices. Third, both frequency and size of price change are larger with online than with offline. Fourth, online and offline price changes are not synchronized, i.e., price changes for a given online and offline product do not occur at the same time. Fifth, when online and offline prices are different, price changes occur in the direction of reducing this difference. Sixth, inflation rates produced with online prices are higher than inflation rates produced with offline prices or CPI inflation rates.
