Abstract

This paper aimed to restore the educational value of tactile experiences, which has been diminished in the visually oriented educational environment of the digital age. Sensory-based threedimensional expression activities were designed and implemented in a high school art class. Drawing on Richard Serra’s Verb List, concept keyword cards were adapted and combined with explorations of corrugated cardboard and clay, enabling students to transform linguistic concepts into tactile actions and threedimensional forms. The researcher participated as a co-designer and observer, while the classes were taught by Teacher H. The study involved five classes of third-year students in a general high school, and data was collected from student worksheets, reports, sculptural works, observation records, teacher interviews, and expert feedback. The collected data was analyzed through coding and thematic categorization within a qualitative case study framework; however, this study specifically focused on describing how linguistic concepts were transformed into tactile actions and material explorations into formative meaning, thereby deriving educational implications. The findings indicate that students experienced the act itself as the essence of creation and engaged in process-centered expression through material exploration. Presentations and critiques expanded reflective thinking and self-awareness, while teachers evaluated the program as effective in fostering creative self-expression. This study demonstrates that tactile-based three-dimensional expression contributes to creativity, self-reflection, and sensory recovery, and suggests its potential applicability in liberal arts education and other extended learning contexts.
