평생토록 '도학(道學)과 절의(節義)는 둘이 아니다'고 하는 주제를 가지고 학문에 임하였던 은봉(隱峯) 안방준(安邦俊 : 1573∼1654)은 조선 후기 유학사상사에서 중요한 위치를 차지한다. 안방준은 전라도 보성(寶城) 출신으로, 조광조(趙光祖)·성혼(成渾) 이이(李珥)의 학통을 계승하여 김인후(金麟厚)·기대승(奇大升) 이후의 호남유학(湖南儒學)의 정맥(正脈)으로 평가를 받는다. 그는 도학과 절의가 하나임을 보여준 정몽주(鄭夢周)와 조헌(趙憲)을 진유(眞儒)로 몹시 경모(景慕)하였으며, 이들의 의리사상(義理思想)을 계승하여 몸소 실천에 옮겼다. 특히 그는 재야(在野)의 산림(山林) 학자의 처지에서도 국난(國難)이 일어나 국가와 백성이 위기에 부딪쳤을 때 분연히 거의(擧義)하여 선비의 기개를 떨치고 유학의 가르침을 선양(宣揚)하였다. 여기서 '도학·절의를 두 가지 일로 나눌 수 없다'고 한 그의 학문관이 지닌 생명력과 역동성을 짐작할 수 있다. 본고를 계기로 안방준 절의사상의 정신사적 맥락, 더 나아가 한국유학사에서 그가 차지하는 위상이 제대로 조명되기를 기대한다.
Abstract
As a key figure in the latter part of the Jo-seon Confucianism, An Bangjun (Eun-Bong, the pseudonym, 1573-1654) devoted his lifetime to the study with the idea that Confucian ethics should not be discussed separately from loyalty. Born in Boseong, Jeolla-do, he inherited from the traditions of such scholars as Jo Gwangjo, Seong Hon, and E E, and is construed as part of the orthodox school--after Kim Inhu and Gi Daeseung--of Confucianism in Jeolla-do. Believing in Jung Mongju and Jo Hun, who found the unity of Confucian ethics and loyalty, he inherited from their loyal spirit and put it into practice. Even as a scholar out of office, he promoted the teachings of confucianism and showed the spirit of a learned man by organizing loyal troops when the nation and its people confronted a crisis. Thus, one may be able to grasp the liveliness of his theory that asserts, "Confucian ethics should not be distinguished from loyalty." The paper aims to review his contribution to the history of Korean Confucianism as well as the historical significance of his loyal spirit.
