Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the effects of community-based group exercise program on motor function and quality of life for patients with stroke. A total of 20 stroke patients were recruited in this study and were randomly assigned exercise group (n=10) and control group (n=10). The exercise group performed once for 60 minutes, three times a week, for eight weeks. The group exercise program conducted four parts based on circuit training, and consisted of 10 minutes for each part according to the purpose of exercise. Wilcoxon’s signed-rank test was performed to determine any difference between the pre-and post-test results of both exercise and control groups. In the exercise group, there were significant differences in upper and lower extremity muscle strength, the lower extremity function (hip/knee/ankle joint), range of motion, trunk balance ability, and quality of life variables. These results suggest that the community-based group exercise program positively affected stroke patients’ motor function and quality of life. Therefore, the community-based group exercise program can be a feasible and suitable intervention program for patients with stroke.
