Abstract

This article is a study on the transfonnation of british trade union movement in the late 19th century, which was called the 'New Unionism' by the british labour historians. The study on the 'New Unionism' had already started by the first generation of british labour historians(Webbs and G. D. H Cole). They had no trouble identifying the causes and the significance of the 'New Unionism' with the socialism. This explanation remains to be continued influence up to the present. And after their argument, the 'New Unionism' was explained by the revival of socialism at the early 18ffis. In addition to that, the timing of the 'New Unionism' explosion was explained by the economic cycle. But the mode to explain the New Unionism as the conjunction of the socialism and economic cycle was not proper. Because this kind of the explanation mode could not inquiry a deep and structural background controlled the emergence of 'New unionism' and the later history. By this reason, we had focused on the restructuring of the labour process at the 18ffis that originate from Great Depression (1873-1800). Therefore the framework of this article is as follows. At first, we started from analysis on the restructuring of labour process 1880s. Then, this analysis made progress to the study on the influence that the restructuring of labour process 1880s effected on unskilled-workers and skilled-workers. In chapter III. comparing the 'New Unionism' with the 'Old Unionism', we treated the organizing form, membership, industrial or political policy and action of new unions, so called 'the institution of the new union'.
