Abstract
The background of the Surobuin article during the time of King SungdokCRtil was experiencing a dry weather. King Sungdok dispatched Sunjonggong('1iJf~) as a "Dcx:lok"(tl! 'If) of Hasuhju(iBJi!!i:l+D to overcome the situation. The king sent Surobuin too, the shaman. A local shaman "Noong"(;I!!;•) helped Surobuin & the village people participated in the ceremony. They had a service to pray for rain to the dragon which is believed to be the God of the sea. Therefore, the article of the Surobuin, has a ritual meaning. "Jung"(ff) is a sandy beach & had the role as a chief of the ritual service. Another "Jung"(ljt) is a place which holds religious services. "Haejung"<ilim is where the first religious service happened & has been guessed around "Jungrajin"(fTJI~) of the "Samchok"(.:=:il!Pl area The second religious service took place in "Irnhaejung"(l!i?lfljt) & has been guessed to be the "Lake Kyungpo"(itilliillll of the Kangnung(iI~) province. We can also assume the "Juson"(U) as a food for the ritual service. Then, "Ju"(~ must be the time schedule of the ritual service. "Yong"(ft), generally conceptualized as the God of the sea but, occasionally, it has a meaning of an angry God, so they believed his anger caused the dry weather. Also, the villagers believed "Yong" has a very weak character & they. believed that they can control "Yong" through ritual doings. Therefore, they sing "Haegasa"(ifiM) for the rite. Catties used to be an offering at "Buyo"(~~"), "Shinra"(ij-JI), "Chosun"(tll#l & other countries, especially Japan & China had a case like this. And we can assume that catties of the article Surobuin must be the sacrificial offerings of the rites. The summit of the highest rockstone is a sacred place between shaman & God. Only shaman can reach this place as a messenger which the villagers are prohibited to go. The God of the sea's place, "Yonggung"(ft'Ef), also considered as a sacred place where Surobuin has been. The deep mountain & big lake where godly things dwelt, is also considered as a sacred place. And for their last assumption, the rronth of the rite for the rain, & the rronth of the blooming of the Azalea flowers had the srure rmnth of the "Kangnung's" & "Sarochok's" worst dry season. So it is assumed that this took place on this rmnths & at the sarre place.
