본 연구는 19세기 발행된 뉴욕 신문을 통해 당시 조선의 이미지가 미국인에게어떻게 반영되었는지를 살펴보는 것이다. 뉴욕 언론은 1818년 처음 조선을 언급한 이후 1830년대까지 주로 책 광고나아시아를 소개하며 그 일부로 조선을 단편적으로 다루었다. 1840년대부터 뉴욕언론은 본격적으로 조선을 다루기 시작하는데 이는 기해박해(己亥迫害)와 무엇보다 상업적 대상으로 아시아에 관심을 두게 되었고 조선 또한 그 상업적 대상의일부로 보기 시작하였음을 의미하며, 이러한 경향은 1850년대 중반까지 지속하였다. 1850년대 중후반 이후 조선에 관한 기사가 이전보다 더욱 증가하였고, 내용또한 미국과 직접적인 연관이 있는 기사가 등장하기 시작하였다. 이는 영향력을태평양 밖으로 확장하려 한 미국을 반영한 것이다. 이러한 모습은 1860년대에보다 직접 등장한다. 1860년대 병인양요(丙寅洋擾)와 제너럴 셔먼(General Sherman)호 사건은 뉴욕 언론의 관심을 끌었고, 무엇보다 이 사건을 통해 이들은 조선을 미국의 잠재적 시장으로 인식하였다. 특히 조선의 정치적 독립을 강조하는 기사를 통해 조선에 대한 중국의 간섭을 피하고자 하였고, 그 과정에서 1871년 신미양요(辛未洋擾)가 발생한 것이다. 뉴욕 언론은 처음 1871년 조선원정을 제너럴 셔먼호 사건의 연장으로 발생한정당한 행위로 보았으나, 이후 조선과의 협상이 결렬되고 물리적 충돌이 발생하여상업 교류에 대한 가능성이 사라지자 조선 원정에 대한 비판이 시작되었다는 것이그 증거이다.
Abstract
This study examines how the image of Joseon was reflected to Americans through the New York newspaper published in the 19th century. The New York press first referred to Joseon in 1818, and since 1830, introduced mainly book advertisements and Asia, and partly treated Joseon as a part of it. The New York press reported Joseon seriously since 1840s, and first of all, they started to see Asia as a commercial region, and Joseon also means that it was part of the view. And this tendency continued until the 1850s. Since the mid-to-late 1850s, reports on Joseon have increased more than ever before, and reports with contents related to the United States have begun to appear. This reflects the United States, who wanted to expand its influence beyond the Pacific. These reports appeared in the 1860s more than ever. In the 1860s, the French campaign against Korea in 1866(Byeonginyangyo, 丙寅洋擾) and General Sherman incident caught the attention of the New York press and above all, they recognized Joseon as a potential United States market. In particular, United States tried to avoid Chinese interference with Joseon through reports that emphasized the political independence of Joseon, and in the process United States expedition to Korea in 1871(Shinmiyangyo, 辛未洋擾) occurred. The New york press saw this confliction as a justifiable act resulting from the extension of the General Sherman incident. But it is evidence that the New York press began to criticize this expedition when negotiations with Joseon were broken and conflicts arose.
