Abstract

⌜The Artistic Activities and Status of Dancers in the Busan Region in the 1950s⌟ seeks to examine the history of characters in the 1950s when Korean dance had started to modernized, which is also the time of the Korean War. The research method is to take a humanistic approach using literature reviews such as papers, books, newspaper materials, dance magazines, performance brochures, and online materials, and dictation methods including dialogues with senior dancers. The subject of the study is dancers who were active in the 1950s when the Korean War broke out and who majored in Korean dance in the Busan region. In those days, the dance renaissance was emerged with the explosion of dancers who had been evacuated due to the Korean War. They constantly had large and small performances, though mentally challenged by the evacuation. Then, I categorized the dance artists who gathered during the evacuation in the followings and selected two or more representative dancers in each category to observe their lives and artistic activities. The first is dancers who had evacuated from Seoul, the second is those who had evacuated from the North Korea, and the third is dancers who had come from local (Busan) or other regions. After the capital relocation, the dance artists who stayed in Busan included Kim Dong-min, Kang Tae-hong, Hwang Mu-bong, Seong Seung-min, Jeong Mu-yeon, Lee Mae-bang, Lee Chun-woo, Oh Hwa-jin, Park Seong-ok, Kang I-moon, Kim Chun-bang, Jang Hong-sim, Han Soon-ok, Han Soon-seo and others. Although Busan was devastated by the war, they had the spirit to inherit the tradition and accepted the new wave of art. Meanwhile, they achieved artistic activities through creative dance education and individual performances. As a result, a variety of traditional dances with the unique charm of Yeongnam region, including the dance with inherent characteristic of dignified Gyobang dance or the Deotbaegichum displaying Baegim-sawi, have taken root in the Busan region. In addition, they developed a new dance with the creative spirit of this era imbued, and it became the period of producing Korean talented dance artists. Furthermore, in the 1950s, it was a time that new creative works had taken root to bear fruit in the continuous wave of modernization and the trend of modernism.
