초록
The paper investigates the function of tanged points excavated from the Suyanggae site locality 1 and 6. It was revealed by use-wear analysis that these tanged points were actually utilized as “multi-functional tools” rather than simple projectile weapons by one of the first arrival groups of Homo sapiens into the Korean Peninsula. Our method of use-wear analysis combines three different techniques, that is, Low-power, Mid-power, and High-power observation. By synthesizing results from three types of microscopic devices, usage patterns of the tanged points were reconstructed. The tang portion of the tool was produced to secure actual hafting. Implications of the present study include new insights into the behavioral meaning of secondary retouch of lithic artifacts, and conceptual recognition of composite tools that requires deep planning depth by early Modern humans. The successful application of microwear analysis to Korean prehistory also testifies wider potential of this technique for East Asian archaeological research.
