대중의 기억을 전시하는 내러티브 뮤지엄 - POLIN 폴란드-유대인 역사박물관의 사례를 중심으로 -

기념관 혹은 추모관의 조성에 있어서 죽음과 학살이라는 첨예한 이야기를 어떻게 전시하고 풀어갈 것인지는 여전히 어려운 과제로 남아있다. 더구나 전시는 잔인한 죽음과 남겨진 유족들이 대중 앞에 세워진다는 측면에서 섬세한 기획이 요구된다. 본 연구는 이에 대한 논의를 위해 ‘POLIN 폴란드-유대인 역사박물관(POLIN Museum of History of Polish-Jews, 이하 폴린뮤지엄)’의 사례를 제시한다. 폴린뮤지엄은 현대사의 비극과 이데올로기적 대립을 다루는 데서 비롯되는 여러 문제를 해결하는데 ‘내러티브 뮤지엄(Narrative Museum)’이라는 독특한 방식으로 유연하게 대처했다는 점에서 검토할만한 사례이다. 내러티브 뮤지엄으로서 폴린뮤지엄은 과거 시대를 살아가는 당대 사람들의 대화, 토론, 회고가 기록된 텍스트를 그대로 인용하고 이를 주요 유물로 두어 전체 전시를 구성한다. 또한 큐레이터의 언어로 설명하기보다 비주얼 이미지를 적극 활용하는 것을 우선하는 방법으로 전시 유물을 보완하였다. 이 과정에서 큐레이터의 재해석은 가능한 배제되었으며 과거 인물 개개인의 이야기를 통해 시대의 기억을 방문객에게 직접 전달한다. 박물관이 진실을 판가름하고 규정하는 것이 아니라 박물관을 통해 사회적으로 가치 있는 논의나 담론을 이끌어내는 것을 목표하였다. ‘폴란드에서 유대인은 누구인가’와 같은 질문은 안고 있되 명확한 정의를 제시하지 않는 대신 관람객이 스스로 정의할 수 있게끔 유도한다. 본 연구는 필자의 현장답사의 기록과 폴린뮤지엄의 공식홈페이지를 1차 연구 자료로 취하고, 그 외에는 문헌연구를 통해 진행되었다. 사례를 연구하기 위한 이론적 토대로서 내러티브 뮤지엄의 개념에 내재되어 있는 기억담론과 신박물관학에 대해 논의하고, 이것이 실제로 어떻게 현상화되는지 폴린뮤지엄의 사례를 통해 탐구하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 오늘날 우리 현대사의 비극을 둘러싼 대립을 중재하고 사회에 담론을 제기하는 전시기획 방법의 하나로 활용할 수 있다는 점에서 의의를 가진다.
Abstract
How to display and exhibit the acute story of death and massacre in the construction of a memorial is still a difficult task. Moreover, the museum is required to delicately plan an exhibition in which cruel death and the remaining bereaved families are exhibited in front of the public. This paper presents the case of the POLIN Museum of History of Polish-Jews (POLIN Museum) to discuss these issues. This case flexibly solves various problems on dealing with the tragedy of modern history and ideologic conflicts in a distinctive way of Narrative Museum. The narrative museum consists of dialogues or written statements about past experiences, ideologies, or thoughts of individuals living in the past and the direct citations of them are exhibited as their main artifacts. Also, rather than the curator's words, visual elements are selected to support the exhibited narratives as artifacts. In the process, while avoiding the curator's interpretation as much as possible, this museum directly delivers the memory of the era through personal narratives of the past. The museum does not judge or define truth, but aims at guiding to valuable discussions or discourses in a society. This museum with the question of 'who is Jews in Poland' provides a journey for visitors to find their own definitions and concepts, not by museum's statements. To examine this case, I conducted field research in the POLIN museum, primary research through the official website of the POLIN museum and secondary research of related references to support this study. This paper first discusses memory studies and new museology in the concept of narrative museum as a theoretical perspective and then analyzes how this concept is practicalized in the POLIN museum case. The result of this study implies that this case can be considered as one of the ways to alleviate the confrontation over the tragedy of modern history and raise discourse in society today.
