이 연구의 목적은 미시건 대학에서, 그리고 시카고 대학에서 특히, 시카고 대학 부속 초등학교라고 불렸던 실험학교에서 듀이가 교육행정가로서 어떠한 삶을 살았는지를 살펴봄으로써 듀이가 행정가로서의 역할에 충실했을 뿐만 아니라 다양하고 새로운 시도를 함으로써 의미 있는 행적을 남겼음을 보이고자 하는 데 있다. 듀이는 철학자로서 그리고 교육학자로 교육사상사에 큰 영향을 준 인물로 알려져 있다. 그러나 다른 한편으로 그의 삶을 살펴보면 20대 후반부터 40대 중반까지 거의 20여년이라는 그의 젊은 시절을 교육행정가로서 많은 책임을 맡아 일하였다. 듀이가 비록 내성적인 성향을 타고났음에도 불구하고 교수와 학자로서 뿐만 아니라 행정가로서도 많은 변화를 시도하고 도전했을 것으로 여겨진다. 따라서 이 연구에서는 듀이가 교육행정가로서 경험한 그의 삶에 초점을 맞추어 미시건 대학의 철학과 학과장으로서, 시카고 대학의 철학과와 교육학과 학과장으로서, 그리고 시카고 대학 실험학교의 책임교수로서의 그의 경험을 살펴보고 분석하면서 그의 삶과 경험에 의미를 부여해 보고자 하였다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine what Dewey was really like as an educational administrator at the University of Michigan, the University of Chicago, and especially at the ‘laboratory school’. Dewey is a philosopher and educator who is well known to have a great influence on educational thought. However, as we look at his life more specifically we will find that he worked as an educational administrator for nearly 20 years from his late 20s to his mid-40s. Although Dewey’s natural inclination is to be introverted, it is certain that Dewey, not only as a professor and scholar, but also as an administrator, has attempted to change and challenge many things. Therefore, the study focused on to examine Dewey's life as an educational administrator. In particular, this study tries to extract some meanings by examining and analyzing Dewey’s experience as the Department head of philosophy in the University of Michigan, the Department head of philosophy and pedagogy at the University of Chicago, and as a founder of the laboratory school at the University of Chicago.
