Abstract
'The Law of Definite Proportions' is included in the 7th national science curriculum of 9th grade. According to the scientific reasoning model, the students who had learned 'The Law of Definite Proportions' could apply the scientific theory and predict phenomena. In this research, 100 students of 10th grade were examined on the application of 'The Law of Definite Proportions' to metal combustion phenomenon. As results of the analyzing the free response descriptive questionnaire, only 15 % of the students could apply 'The Law of Definite Proportions' to natural phenomena and calculate them numerically. 52 % of them could solve mathematical problems of application level, but they don’t have the concept of the law. Some of them didn’t even have the concept of metal combustion, which is used when understanding 'The Law of Definite Proportions'. In many cases, the students predicted natural phenomena without using 'The Law of Definite Proportions', which they had learned in school. As pre-teachers, it is valuable to know the understanding of students about the natural phenomena.
