Abstract
This study aims to analyze the current implementation status of ‘Integrated Science 1 and 2’ in high schools under the 2022 Revised Curriculum, examine the perceptions of science teachers, and draw implications for classroom practice. A survey was conducted with 84 high school science teachers nationwide, and the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, and ANOVA. The results showed that 90.4 % of schools offered Integrated Science as a 4-credit course per semester, and teacher assignment was primarily determined by subject expertise and fairness in teaching hours. More than 74.6 % of classes were conducted through team-teaching, which was preferred due to its advantages of utilizing subject expertise, ensuring assessment reliability, and reducing lesson preparation burdens. Although teachers recognized the need for inquiry- and discussion-based instruction, they continued to rely heavily on lecture-based methods, and their confidence varied significantly depending on whether the content aligned with their major. Distinct differences in teaching confidence were found depending on whether the subject matter matched teachers’ majors, and a heavy burden was reported for teaching out-of-major content, primarily due to a ‘lack of content knowledge.’ This burden was further exacerbated by the fact that Integrated Science is designated as a required subject for the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT). Teachers recognized key differences from the 2015 curriculum, such as ‘ensuring minimum achievement levels’ and ‘mandatory CSAT subject designation’. To stabilize the implementation of Integrated Science, teachers suggested reducing the number of subjects assigned to each teacher, strengthening collaboration among teachers. The study concludes that long-term enhancement of teacher expertise and establishment of institutional support systems are necessary for the sustainable implementation of Integrated Science.
