Abstract

This study analyzes the discrepancies between the water cooling curve experiments presented in middle school science textbooks and actual experimental results and proposes improvements for classroom implementation. Textbooks describe the cooling process as a steady decrease in temperature, with freezing occurring at 0°C. However, actual experiments show supercooling phenomena, where the temperature drops below 0°C before abruptly rising as freezing begins. Additionally, the experiments often exceed the duration of a typical class period, making it difficult to complete them within the allotted time. In response, this study replicated the textbook experiments, investigated the causes of discrepancies, and designed an improved experimental method. The revised method maintains the coolant temperature below –10°C, increases the initial temperature of the water, and uses a magnetic stirrer to promote convection. These modifications minimize supercooling and shorten the experiment duration, enhancing the consistency between experimental results and textbook descriptions. As a result, the improved method in here enables more effective execution of the experiments in educational settings.
