Abstract
The central presupposition of the Reformed Life Theology is the proposition that“Theology is not a science.”This proposition brought many discussions on whether theology is a science or not. To understand, thus, the relationship between theology and science will be a proper starting point to grasp what the Reformed Life Theology is intended for. For the purpose of this paper, I would like to examine two prominent Reformed theologians. They are Francis Turretin and Herman Bavinck. The name of Francis Turretin is synonymous with the term“Reformed Orthodox”in 17th century. Bavinck stands at the apex of the development of Neo-Calvinism in 20th century. These two extraordinary theologians suggested their own assertions which seemed inconsistent. Turretin asserted that“Theology is not a science,”while Bavinck insisted that“Theology is a science.”Without question, the importance of two theologians in the church history is so great that we need to inquire their assertions. In this article, I will survey the essential meaning of those opposed propositions to find out the original meaning in the historical background. As a result of this examination, I will prove that we do not need to give up one of them, but apply them in our context. Further, Turretin’s thesis that“Theology is not a science”will be my final conclusion for today.
