Abstract

This paper focuses on the baptism of Acts 2:38 by exploring the literary structure, theology, and syntax of the whole Acts of the Apostles. Because Acts 2:38 closely connects important themes such as repentance, baptism, forgiveness of sins and the Holy Spirit, it is crucial for the study of the baptism of the Acts of the Apostles. In fact, there are at least five cases of baptism in the Acts of the Apostles: (1) people receive the baptism of water, then they do the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38; 16:15, 33-34; 19:5-7), (2) people receive the baptism of John the Baptist for the forgiveness of sins (13:24; 19:1-4), (3) people first receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit, then they receive water baptism (9:17-18; 10:44-48), (4) although receiving the Holy Spirit, they do not have the baptism of Jesus (18:24-25), and (5) they are baptized in the name of Jesus but they do not receive the Holy Spirit (8:14-16, 26-39). In Acts of the Apostles, these types show that baptism is done in the name of Jesus Christ, and it is related to the gift of the Holy Spirit. They also demonstrate that the baptism of John the Baptist for repentance continues in the baptism of the early church. Exampled in the Septuagint, the third-person imperative of Acts 2:38, “Be Baptized,” emphatically expresses the need for all those who hear the word to participate in baptism as part of repentance in distributive fashion. Because Acts 2:38 is parallel to the structure and the meaning of Acts 3:19, its meaning becomes clearer in comparison. Therefore, although this interpretation does not appear at the same time with the remission of sin, repentance, the Holy Spirit, and salvation in baptism throughout Acts, because the rest of the elements are circulating around baptism, Acts 2:38 clearly indicates the purpose of baptism. Therefore, Acts 2:38 demonstrates that baptism is a kernel of the remission of sin in receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit.
