Abstract

Objectives This study aims to comprehensively examine the clinical effectiveness of the Yin-Yang Balancing Therapy of the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ-YBT) and classify and analyze its application based on the Korean Standard Classification of Diseases, 8th edition (KCD-8). The goal is to present clinical evidence for TMJ-YBT as a form of integrative Korean medicine and provide foundational data to expand the application scope of Functional Cerebrospinal Technique (FCST). Methods To investigate the clinical trends of FCST in Korean medicine, case reports were searched from six domestic databases. The selected literature was classified according to KCD-8 codes, and data on patient characteristics, FCST treatment methods, concurrent interventions, treatment duration, and treatment outcomes were extracted and analyzed. Result A total of 57 case reports published between 2006 and 2024 were included, encompassing 89 patients. FCST was applied across eight disease categories (D, F, G, H, K, M, N, R), with the most frequent applications in M, G, and F codes. Most studies combined FCST with acupuncture and herbal medicine, while some included additional therapies such as Chuna manual therapy, moxibustion, and cervical spinal manipulation. All analyzed case reports reported positive treatment outcomes, including symptom improvement. Conclusion This study systematically reviewed the clinical effectiveness of FCST therapy in Korea by classifying cases based on KCD-8 codes. The results suggest clinical potential for FCST as part of integrative Korean medicine in treating a variety of conditions. These findings may serve as a foundational reference for expanding the clinical applications of FCST.
