Abstract

In cases of partially edentulous patient with a few remaining teeth located unilaterally, it is often difficult to achieve adequate retention, support, and stability with a conventional removable partial denture (RPD) alone. These patients typically masticate predominantly on the side where teeth remain, which may lead to significant rotational movement of the prosthesis during function. This rotational force places undue stress on the abutment teeth, potentially compromising their long-term prognosis. Therefore, when restoration using only the remaining abutment teeth is expected to be challenging, the use of implant assisted removable partial denture (IARPD) may offer a more predictable treatment outcome. By strategically placing dental implants, the prosthesis can benefit from additional retention, support, and stability, leading to improved masticatory function and higher patient satisfaction. This case report presents the prosthetic rehabilitation of a patient with a few remaining mandibular teeth limited to one side. Two implants were placed in the edentulous region, and surveyed crowns were fabricated to support a bilateral distal extension IARPD. This approach effectively converted the unilateral support to bilateral support, enhancing the stability and retention of the prosthesis.
