Abstract

This study investigates the musicological implications of machine musicianship, a concept gaining prominence with the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) in music generation. More than a mere aggregation of technical functions, machine musicianship is conceived as a framework that reveals evolving conditions of musical agency, judgment, and cognition through human–machine interaction. To contextualize this notion, the study traces the historical genealogy of music-making technologies, from ancient automata to contemporary AI-based composition systems. Drawing on technical and philosophical discourses, it examines how machine musicianship reconfigures creativity and redefines the boundaries of artistic perception. By analyzing how shifts in sensory structures and compositional processes affect modes of reception, the study positions machine musicianship as a conceptual framework for questioning the ontological foundations of music. Ultimately, it suggests that machine musicianship should not be regarded merely as a technological application, but recognized as a legitimate theoretical resource for rethinking contemporary musical practice.
