한국어와 타밀어의 친족 호칭어 대조 연구

본 연구는 한국어와 타밀어에 있는 친족 호칭어를 대조하고 이를 교육하기 위해 친족 호칭어 목록을 만들었다. 특히 친족 호칭어 중에 부계 호칭어, 모계 호칭어, 부부간의 호칭어를 대조하고 목록을 정리하였다. 한국과 타밀 사회 모두 예절을 중요시한다는 점에서 한국과 타밀 호칭 관계가 얼마나 비슷한지, 어떤 문화적 특성이 호칭어에 차이를 만드는지 살펴보았다. 그 결과 첫째, 한국어와 타밀어 호칭어 중에 아빠, 엄마, 아이, 언니, 할아버지 등의 어휘가 비슷하다는 것을 확인하였다. 이외에 비슷한 어휘가 몇 가지 더 있으나, 한국어 호칭어는 상대방의 성별이나 결혼 여부로 인해 달라지는 데 반해, 타밀어 호칭어는 화자의 성별과 상대방의 결혼 여부에 따라서 변하지 않다는 점을 알 수 있었다. 둘째, 한국어 부계 호칭어(아빠의 형제와 아빠 형제의 아내)와 모계 호칭어가(엄마의 자매와 엄마 자매의 남편) 다른 반면, 타밀어의 부계 호칭어(아버지의 형제와 아버지 형제의 아내)와 모계 호칭어(이모와 이모의 남편)는 유사하다. 셋째, 한국어 호칭어 중 고종사촌, 외종사촌과 이종사촌에게 쓰는 호칭어는 변함이 없는데, 타밀 사회에서 고종사촌, 외종사촌과 이종사촌 사이의 관계가 각기 다르므로 이들에게 쓰는 호칭어 체계도 다르다는 점을 발견할 수 있었다. 마지막으로 타밀어에 있는 '마마'라는 한 호칭어를 한국어에서는 여러 호칭어로 표현하므로 그 어휘와 관련된 호칭어를 가르칠 때는 주의해야 한다. 본 연구는 한국인과 타밀어권 학습자를 위한 최초 호칭어 교육 연구로서 호칭 어휘를 가르칠 때 도움이 되길 바란다. 또한 본 연구는 한국어와 타밀어 친족 호칭어 대조에만 집중하였지만, 한국인과 타밀어권 학습자를 위한 어휘교육 방안 연구 필요하다는 점을 강조한다.
Abstract
This paper compares kinship terminologies in Korean and Tamil languages and creates a categorization of kinship vocabulary for teaching purposes. I specifically list kinship terminologies across three categories related to paternal, maternal and conjugal relationships. While doing so, I underline the importance of etiquette while addressing relatives in both Korean and Tamil languages. I highlight the cultural factors in Korean and Tamil kinship relations which underlines the similarities and differences in kinship terms in both these languages. The paper presents four major findings. First, Tamil and Korean languages have similar words and pronunciation for relationships like "father", "mother", "baby", "sister," and "grandfather". However, while kinship terms in Tamil remain the same irrespective of gender and martial status of the individual, Korean kinship words vary based on these factors. Second, I find that Korean kinship terms varied across paternal(father's brothers and their spouses) and maternal(mother's sisters and their spouses) relationship, while kinship terms in Tamil remained the same in these contexts. Third, while kinship terms used to refer to parallel and cross cousins varied in Tamil, they remained the same in Korean language. Fourth, the study finds that a single term "mama" in Tamil encompasses various kinship relations which was expressed using different words in Korean language. Based on these findings, the paper presents a framework for categorization of kinship vocabulary which could be used in developing systematic teaching module for Tamil and Korean learners. Though the focus of this study was limited to kinship terminologies, further research could use such a framework to develop educational strategies for teaching other vocabulary to Tamil and Korean learners.
