Abstract

Responding to Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House books, which do not recognize the presence of Asian Americans in the American Midwest, Linda Sue Park’s Prairie Lotus is a Chinese American girl Hanna’s maturation narrative set in the Midwest in the 1880s. On the other hand, Park’s debut novel SeeSaw Girl is a more curious rendition of the Little House books that reverberates with a reserved silence on Wilder’s influence. The reticent traces of the Little House books found in SeeSaw Girl strongly evince Wilder’s legacy and how deeply it is ingrained, epitomizing Park’s writerly identity born of American children’s literature. Featuring Jade, the twelve-year-old daughter of a noble family in seventeenth-century Korea, SeeSaw Girl provides an intriguing parallel to Laura’s bildungsroman in the Little House books, notwithstanding their disparities in temporal, spatial, and social terms. This paper considers SeeSaw Girl’s consanguinity with the Little House books in terms of conventions of American children’s literature, female bildungsroman, and frontier narrative. From SeeSaw Girl to Prairie Lotus, Park has not stopped to engage with and retell the Little House books, not only inheriting and reenacting Wilder’s legacy but also appropriating and claiming Wilder’s prairie that excludes the Asian American presence.
