인성교육을 위한 그림책의 교육 및 치유적 활용

최근 모든 교육기관과 정부기관에서 인성교육을 실시할 것이 의무화되어 효과적이고 다양한 인성교육의 방법들에 대한 요구가 커지고 있는 상황이다. 그림책은 특히 어린 연령의 교육대상자들을 위한 인성교육의 매체로 주목받고 있다. 그러나 많은 경우 그림책을 활용했다는 그 자체에만 초점이 맞추어져 있는 것으로 보인다. 따라서 본 연구는 인성교육을 위한 유용한 매체로서 그림책의 활용에 있어 발생하고 있는 문제점을 밝히고 개선의 방향을 제안해보고자 한다. 이러한 목적에 따라 먼저 그림책을 활용한 인성교육에 관한 연구들을 모으고 그 내용을 분석함으로써 그림책 활용의 문제를 발견할 수 있었다. 수집된 연구들은 인성교육진흥법의 분류기준에 따라 그림책을 8개 범주로 목록화한 것 이외의 별다른 차별성 없는 독서교육의 과정으로 인성교육을 수행한 것으로 보였다. 인성교육의 효과를 입증하는데 있어서도 그림책을 활용하는 프로그램의 특수성에 대한 고려가 없는 것으로 보였다. 또한 이러한 연구들에서는 그림책이 어떻게 활용되었는가에 대한 상세한 내용을 찾아보기 어려웠을 뿐 아니라 개별 그림책의 주제 활용에 있어서도 옳고 그름과 교훈을 찾는 수준에 그치는 경우가 많았다. 그림책을 인성교육을 위한 매체로 활용하기 위해서는 그림책이 가지고 있는 가장 중요한 장점인 글과 그림, 각각의 페이지와 장면들에서 만들어진 여백과 간극에 주목해야 할 것이다. 즉 이러한 공간들을 메울 수 있는 자기서사를 투영할 수 있는 과정이 필요하며 이를 통해 비로소 치유적 과정이 일어나 인성교육의 궁극적 목적에 도달할 수 있을 것이다. 이러한 그림책의 활용이 인성교육을 위한 교사교육에 포함될 필요성이 논의되었다.
Abstract
Recently, all educational institutions and government agencies in Korea have been required to provide personality education and, there are increasing demands for effective and diverse methods of this type of education. In relation to this new demand, picture books are receiving attention as a medium for personality education especially for students of young age. However, in many cases, picture books seem to be used in a very limited manner. Therefore, this study aims to analyze problems and suggest a possible course of improvement in the use of picture books as a medium of personality education. For this purpose, prior studies of personality education were collected and analyzed to determine the content of character education research conducted on the use of picture books. The analyzed studies mainly classified picture books into 8 categories of characteristics according to the criteria set by the South Korean government. However, the validity of such classifications has not been substantiated properly. In addition, not only was it difficult to find details about how picture books were utilized, but the use of individual, themed books was very limited since most studies only focused on whether something is right or wrong, and the lesson of the story. To effectively use picture books as a medium for personality education, an educator should pay careful attention to the most important strengths of picture books which are mainly the margins and gaps between pictures and texts created in each page and scene. It is necessary to engage the reader to fill these gaps and margins to facilitate a thought process to achieve the important goals of character education and healing. In conclusion, this study recommends that education about this aspect of utilizing picture books should be included in the training of teachers for personality education.
