Abstract

Riparian wetlands are characterized by intricate interplays among geomorphological processes, vegetation communities, and anthropogenic influences. Nevertheless, field-scale investigations that elucidate the combined impacts of these factors on soil properties remain limited. In this study, we explored the spatial variability of soil attributes within a riparian wetland near Godal Bridge along the Seomjingang River in Jeollanam-do. A total of 78 soil samples were systematically collected, with measurements recorded for elevation, soil depth, soil moisture content, pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and soil organic matter (SOM) at each sampling point. The landscape was further classified into four distinct units based on vegetation type (herb versus tree) and disturbance history (anthropogenic versus natural). Statistical analyses demonstrated that the spatial distribution of soil properties was significantly driven by vegetation and disturbance factors, with marked differences observed in pH and SOM across vegetation types. Conversely, geomorphic variables such as elevation and soil depth exhibited limited explanatory power regarding soil variability. Notably, strong correlations were found between soil moisture content and SOM, as well as between pH and EC. These results challenge the traditional geomorphological paradigm that prioritizes topography as the dominant determinant of soil property distribution, highlighting the critical need for integrative approaches in understanding and managing riparian wetland ecosystems.
