Abstract

The assessments of the Korean comtemporary history are still controversial because of the socio-political and ideological differences. The disputes on the clash of tradition and foreign culture are also continued although many did not understand that the historical foundation of this issue was set up in the 1970s. During this decade, Western culture was adopted by many Korean without criticism for the survival under the slogan of economic development. At the moment of entering into the developed country, those disputes and arguments are meaningful and positive when we understand the nature and characteristics to Koreanize the phenomena. In the 1970s Korea faced the challenges for economic development and democracy. For the daily survival, it was impossible to look ourselves. Still, Koreans prepared the future by witnessing the progress little by little. This study tries to provide and analyze the objective views of Korea in the 1970s through the reports of the New York Times and Los Angeles Times. They would not be biased. Still, it is meaningful to know how the foreign mass media saw Korea and how they predicted the Korea’s future.
