Bennett 모형에 근거한 다문화교육 프로그램이 다문화 인식과 자아존중감에 미치는 영향

초록

본 연구는 Bennett 모형에 근거한 다문화 교육 프로그램을 개발하고 초등학생을 대상으로 실시한 후, 학습자의 다문화 인식과 자아존중감에 미치는 영향을 검증하는 데 목적이 있다. 인천에 위치한 M초등학교 6학년 2개 학급 60명의 아동을 대상으로 실험집단과 비교집단을 구성하였다. 실험집단은 재량활동 시간에 다문화 교육 프로그램을, 비교 집단은 학교의 재량활동인 한자 프로그램을 16차시 동안 적용하였다. 연구 결과의 분석은 요인분석과 t-검증을 실시하였다. 양적 연구를 보완하기 위해 반 구조화된 면담지와 학습자와의 인터뷰, 소집단별 수업 관찰을 통해 다문화 인식의 변화를 기술하였다. 연구 결과는 첫째, 다문화 교육 프로그램을 적용한 실험집단은 비교집단에 비해 다문화 인식 향상되었으며 다문화 인식의 하위 요소인 개방성, 수용성, 존중성 모두 향상을 보였다. 둘째, 다문화 교육 프로그램은 자아존중감 향상에도 효과가 있었다. 자아존중감의 하위 요소 중 가정적 자아존중감을 제외한 일반적 자아존중감과 사회적 자아존중감, 학업적 자아존중감 모두 향상을 보였다. 셋째, 실험 집단에서 학업 성취도에 따른 다문화 인식은 차이를 보이지 않았으며, 성별에 따라서는 여자가 남자보다 다문화 인식이 향상된 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 본 연구 결과, 다문화 교육 프로그램이 다문화 인식의 향상뿐만 아니라 자아존중감 향상에도 유용하며, 여자가 남자보다 다문화 인식에 좀 더 수용적인 것으로 나타났다.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to develop a multicultural education program for elementary students based on Bennett's model and to identify the influence of this multicultural education program on their multicultural awareness and self-esteem. For this study, the following questions have been determined: First, what effect does the multicultural education program have on students' multicultural awareness? Second, what effect does the multicultural education program have on students' self-esteem? Third, does the effect of the multicultural education program on multicultural awareness vary depending upon the academic achievement level of students? Fourth, does the effect of the multicultural education program on multicultural awareness vary depending upon students' sex? Fifth, how is students' multicultural awareness changed qualitatively?To solve the study problems, two elementary classes were selected as an experimental group and a control group. In order to investigate the change of students' multicultural awareness qualitatively, a semi-structured interview paper and an instructor's observation diary were prepared. The collected data was analyzed using the SPSS 12.0 program. The conclusions obtained through this study are as follows: First, the multicultural education program was indicated to be effective for enhancing multicultural awareness and self-esteem. Second, the academic achievement levels of students had no effect upon the level of multicultural awareness attained. Third, regarding the analysis of multicultural awareness according to sex, women are more sensitive in multicultural awareness than men, which supports the results of Higbee et al. (2007) and Cox (1982).
