Abstract
Power, Image, Text : Illustrated Gong'an Texts in the Late Ming Period Park, So-hyeon This study intends to shed light on complex relationships between ideology, image, and text, and what role a popular text with simple illustrations such as gong'an(公案) played in popularizing the dominant ideology and internalizing power relations. Gong'an or crime story collections with woodblock illustrations produced with the rise of print culture in the Wanli(萬曆, 1573∼1620) period may be considered as a prominent example illustrating complex interplay between power, ideology, and print culture. This paper mainly consists of two parts―the former concentrates on a brief history of woodblock illustrations in imperial China and the interaction between image and Confucian ideology in the rich tradition of Chinese painting; the latter on woodblock illustrations inserted in the gong'an collections. In this study, taking into consideration the close relationship of image and power structure that Michel Foucault and Roland Barthes lay an emphasis on, I analyse how popular images reproduced in the gong'an illustrations reflected traditional Confucian values, and what impact Confucian ideology made on the traditional culture of vision.
