Abstract

The objective of this thesis is to understand the influences of Persian Mithraism as an ancient religion that has disappeared now, on the thought of Mahayana Buddhism. Mithraism which is one of the oldest religions was dawning from Persia in 1,400 B.C. Even though it expanded its religious influence to the Middle East, Africa, Central Asia, and Europe, it was forgotten as Christianity and Zoroastrianism were declared as the state religion of Rome and Persia. Contrary to the fact in which Mithraism was widely spread to many continents, the relevant data is not much left because of the unique doctrine of Mithraism that did not leave records. Even in Rome where it formed the greatest power, most of its data was destroyed by religious persecution after the declaration of Christianity. Mithraism without records became an ancient religion erased from a map. However, together with many other religions like Zoroastrianism, Islam, and Buddhism, Persian Mithraism has left its traces by having great influences on the mythology, literature, and arts of Central Asia. The traces of Mithraism influenced the thought and arts of Mahayana Buddhism in Central Asia, which was spread to Silla through Sogdians. Its representative examples are Maitreya ideology and Sassanian Patterns. However, Persian Mithraism has not been fully researched in Korea, so the accurate meanings and origin of those thought and patterns spread to Silla have not been understood yet. For this reason, the researchers who study exchanges between Silla and Persia have researched the ancient manuscripts of Persia left in Iran to reveal the origin and meanings. The archaeologists of Iran found the origin from Mithraism closer to mythology and thought rather than religion. This study aims to examine the history and doctrine of Persian Mithraism, and the influences of Mithraism on the thought of Mahayana Buddhism, based on Persian materials and preceding researches in the Iranian archaeological world.
