Abstract

This paper examines the formation of modern and contemporary Korean Buddhist wedding ceremonies and their ideological backgrounds. In Chapter II, it explores the structure and ideological background of traditional wedding ceremonies, while Chapter III discusses the formation of Buddhist wedding cere- monies and their ideological background. It investigates various Buddhist wedding ceremonies, including the wedding ceremony outlined in Yi Neunghwa's "History of Korean Buddhism" (1918), the wedding ceremonies in Baek Yongseong's "Daegakgyo Ceremony" and the wedding ceremonies depicted in Ahn Jin-ho's "Bulja Pilram" and "SeokmunUiBeom" It also examines wedding ceremonies com- piled in the "Explanatory Text and Rules of the Lotus Sutra" in the late 20th century, as well as those in the "Tongilbeopyojib" and "Rituals of Buddhist Practice" by the Jogye Order. The paper ex- plores the creation and transformation of Buddhist wedding cere- monies, along with their ideological backgrounds, focusing on the significance of the seven flowers in the story of Buddha's past life and the preciousness of relationships as described in the Lotus Sutra. While contemporary Buddhist wedding ceremonies largely resemble non-religious ceremonies held in domestic wedding halls, it suggests that to embody Buddhist ideals to some extent, cere- monies should emphasize reciprocal relationships centered around karmic connections and vows, involve prayers to heavenly beings or ancestors, and include mutual vows and declarations made to parents, relatives, and guests in a spirit of mutual respect.
