초록

Record of the History of Korean Aristocrat Lady Yi Adrift (Ghi Triều Tiên quý tộc Lý nữ sĩ lưu lạc lịch sử 記朝鮮貴族李女士淪落歷史) is a Sinitic-language work of fiction authored pseudonymously by the “Lady with a Gallant Spirit” (俠魂女士) and serialized in Southern Wind Magazine (Nam Phong tạp chí 南風雜誌) from 1922 to 1923. The story features a classically erudite Korean noblewoman who decides to flee the Japanese colonization of her country and campaign for Korean independence while journeying around East Asia and the Pacific at large. During her travels, she befriends several Chinese women, as well as the granddaughter of the Filipino nationalist and writer José Rizal (1861–96), with whom she commiserates by exchanging Sinitic poetry. This contribution begins with an introduction to the historical setting and literary milieu in which Southern Wind Magazine and this specific story emerged, followed by an annotated translation of the story that explains the wide range of classical allusions and contemporary references present in the text.
