Abstract

Agnès Varda’s <Daguerréotypes> is a documentary film that captures the mundane daily lives of the residents of Rue Daguerre in 1970s Paris. It explores acts of resistance by individuals and the com munity as they strive to preserve their traditions and identities amidst the pressures of modernization and urbanization. This study centers on Michel de Certeau’s theory of everyday life, employing his concepts of strategy and tactics to analyze how everyday practices confront societal changes and em body resistance. Varda’s perspective as a female director informs her observational approach, captur ing the minutiae of daily life while offering a reimagined mode of representation that departs from traditional male gaze in cinema. Notably, this study highlights Varda’s choice of documentary over fiction as a deliberate exploration of the interplay between the stillness of photography and the movement inherent in cinema, thereby addressing the concept of intermediality. The intersection of photographic documentation and cinematic temporality transcends the medium’s technical aspects, aesthetically reconstructing everyday life and transforming it into a form of artistic memory. Varda’s selection of Rue Daguerre, where she herself resided, as the film’s backdrop reflects a deeply in ternalized engagement with the notions of space and place. After all, <Daguerréotypes> recontextu alizes the value of traditional ways of life in an era of rapid modernization and urban transformation. By observing the everyday, Varda’s documentary transcends mere documentation, delving into the politics of daily life and visualizing the resistance and creativity inherent in the ordinary.
