Abstract

Eugene O’Neill’s Aesthetic Consciousness for Audience Response The purpose of this paper is to examine Eugene O’Neill’s aesthetic consciousness for audience response with intellective and imaginative theatrical sense. O’Neill uses various devices like chorus, contrast and parody throughout his plays to strengthen his dramatic themes. Chorus acts as the commentator as well as cognitive guide for the audience. So the chorus helps the audience with raising psychological response. Contrast brings into relief for the antagonism between the two influentials. Mostly in O’Neill’s plays, at the start of the first act, there coexists them in the stage directions. And O’Neill’s use of the novelistic direction and monologue is manifest to express the complication aspects. O’Neill leads the audience to pass his imagination using this mechanism. Parody is one mode of coming to terms with the texts of the abundant and intimidatory legacy of the past. O’Neill uses parody as much to sacralize as to desacralize, to comment ironically on implications of certain subject. Its range of intent is form respectful admiration to biting ridicule.
