이 논문은 한국사회에서 시민들이 일상적으로 이용하는 ‘찜질방’의 분석을 통하여, 찜질방이 그 일부를 구성하고 있는 ‘방(房)문화’의 의미, 더 나아가서는‘한국인의 일상문화’의 현재적 모습을 살피는 것을 그 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해찜질방의 공간 구성, 이용자들의 성격, 이용자들의 의례, 그리고 찜질방과 관련된 상상계(想像界)를 분석 대상으로 한다. 이를 통해 이 공간이, 첫째, ‘숨은 광장’이라고 가정할 수 있으며, 둘째, ‘공과 사의 혼융’을 보여준다는 의미에서 한국에 ‘고유한’ 공간이라기보다는 ‘포스트-모던적’이라고 일반화시킬 수 있는 공간이며, 셋째, 한국사회에 대한 ‘신화 분석’의 측면에서 보았을 때 이 공간이 ‘디오니소스’적이라는 점을 밝히고자 한다.
Abstract
This article aims at analysing the 'jjimjilbang', the contemporary korean sauna. With this, it tries to clarify indirectly some essential characteristics of the 'culture of the bang(room)' and the contemporary everyday culture in Korea in general. For this purpose, this article analyses the form and the composition of the space of jjimjilbang, the compostion of its users, their rituals, and the imaginaries regarding the jjimjilbang. We propose three conclusions. Firstly, we suppose that jjimjilbang is a kind of 'hidden place'. Secondly, jjimjilbang is likely to be a space which we can characterize 'post-modern' rather than that which is proper to Korea. Last, we can name this space 'Dionysus' from the point of view of 'mythanalysis'.
