The Study of present condition about Japanese Seamless Knit Machine Industry - Using the Case of Innovation in SHIMA SEIIKI -

Shima Seiki Mfg., Ltd. is a global leading manufacturer of the computerized flatbed knitting machine and related design systems. In the textile machine boom during Japan’s high growth period, the company surpassed its competitors with its automation technology and the high quality and performance of its products and so on. Shima Seiki became one of Japan’s top in knit industry in ten years and grew world-top three companies in twenty years after start-up with the successful development of mass-produced computerized machines and comprehensive design systems for users. This article investigates how Shima Seiki developed its original “Wholegarment” technology and products, which attempted to propose an entirely new business model to the knit industry, and suggests something for Korean knit industry to survive global competition. The characteristics of the technical innovation process of Japan’s knit industry contains Shima Seiki is change from labor-intensive industry to knowledge-intensive industry.
