초록
This study explores how phonological complexity at the consonantal phoneme level is neurally manifested in an overt production task. We used functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging(fMRI) to test English-speaking adults as they produced bisyllabic pseudowords in which we manipulated articulatory complexity defined in terms of sonority and instability (viz., Complex: /ata/ >> Mid-Complex: /asa/ >> Simple /ara/). Increased activity in the inferior frontal gyrus (Brodmann areas (BA) 47 and 45), supplementary motor area and premotor cortex/precentral gyrus were found for the articulation of Complex stimuli relative to Mid-Complex; this was true for the articulation of Mid-Complex stimuli as compared with Simple. The results indicate that phonological complexity is mirrored in the neurobiological processing of distinct consonants by recruiting brain regions linked to the retrieval of phonological information from memory as well as those associated with articulatory rehearsal and the planning and coordination of articulators for the Complex consonants. Moreover, the result that shows increased complexity activates more areas of the brain suggests that brain activation can be a potential neural measure of articulatory complexity, complementing biomechanical measurements of speech motor acts.
