A Comparative Study on the Sewing Techniques of “Shirts” in Teaching Materials of Clothing Configuration.

Shirts do not differ greatly from one another in appearance. However, sewing techniques of shirts vary according to designs which is very important in terms of clothing construction. For this reason, this study compared and analyzed sewing techniques of shirts described in 12 clothing construction textbooks which are currently being used by universities and institutions in fashion education. The results of this study are as follows. First, the descriptions as to whether and where interlining that are used for dimensional stability in the making of shirts should be attached were different across textbooks. Second, regarding the process of sewing a torso of shirts, the methods of attaching the back yoke to the torso and of sewing side lines were differently described across textbooks. Third, regarding the process of attaching the torso to the sleeves of shirts, the application of sewing techniques which differed according to designs were not clearly described and additional explanations of such techniques were also not provided. It appeared that this is a problem that should be fixed in the future. Finally, as for the process of sewing the slits of the sleeves, detailed explanations are required because tailoring and sewing techniques vary depending on materials. However, the textbooks did not give sufficient explanations.
