초록
Background: Korean medicine is effective in relieving symptoms of thalamic syndrome; however, further studies on its effects on dysesthesia and pain are needed. Objectives: This study aimed to report a case of thalamic syndrome caused by acute right thalamic infarction that improved with complex Korean medicine treatment. Methods: A 64-year-old male patient with thalamic syndrome caused by an acute right thalamic infarction was treated with herbal medicine, acupuncture, electroacupuncture, and physiotherapy. Treatment results were measured using a Numerical Rating Scale. The degree of sensation in the affected area compared to that in the unaffected area was assessed daily. Results: After treatment, the patient showed improvement in spontaneous pain and heat sensation in the left facial area and left upper arm, with NRS score from 4 to 0. Sensation in the affected area increased from 60 to 90% compared to that in the unaffected area. Conclusions: Korean medicine may be effective in alleviating the symptoms of thalamic syndrome.
