초록

Throughout history, humanity has consistently endeavored to comprehend the essence of life and achieve enduring fulfillment-a quest that frequently leads to self-actualization. More than merely a psychological condition, self-actualization signifies a core human necessity: an ongoing journey of development, transformation, and the realization of one’s true potential. The esteemed Brazilian author Paulo Coelho places the human experience at the forefront of his narratives, exploring the spiritual and existential aspects of existence. Instead of concentrating on conventional epic heroes, Coelho’s stories often highlight ordinary individuals whose internal journeys are equally remarkable. Characters like Santiago in The Alchemist (1988) and Maria in Eleven Minutes (2003) embark on profoundly personal quests, challenging societal expectations and internal constraints to discover the treasures concealed within themselves. While Santiago’s journey is motivated by the pursuit of his Personal Legend, Maria’s path delves into themes of love, self-worth, and the intricacies of human relationships. Both characters embody resilience, bravery, and the transformative nature of self-discovery. This paper seeks to examine their progression into self-actualized beings, shedding light on the universal themes of destiny, purpose, and the search for inner fulfillment that resonate throughout Coelho’s oeuvre. Through these narratives, Coelho provides deep insights into how individuals can traverse their own journeys toward meaning and self-realization.
